At the Y, swimming is a life skill. Our lessons prepare kids of all ages to stay safe and have fun in the water, building strong swimmers and confident kids.

Our aquatics instructors are dedicated to helping your child discover their love of water, while also having splashy fun! From back floats to making the swim team, we are here every swim stroke of the way. All instructors are trained under the YMCA of the USA guidelines and certified in Basic Life Support (CPRO), Emergency Oxygen Administration and Basic First Aid.

Swim Starters

Ages 6mo.-2 years: Accompanied by parents, infants and toddlers are introduced to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

Required: Child must wear a swim diaper if not 100% potty trained.

Ages 2-3: Parents work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Required: Child is required to wear a swim diaper if not 100% potty trained. Goggles are recommended.

Swim Basics

Ages 2.5-3.5: Students further develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.

Required: Child must have taken Stage A or B class and be able to sit on pool edge independently for 30 minutes (without parent).

Ages 3-6, 6-12, 10-15: Students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Best for non-swimmers or children that still require a floatation aid.

Ages 3-6, 6-12: Students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

Required: Child must be able to swim for a distance of 15 feet on front and back without a floatation aid.

Swim Strokes

Ages 3-6, 6-12: Students develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

Required: Child must be able to swim a lap of proper freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards.

Ages 5-8, 8-12: Students work on stroke technique and improve upon all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

Required: Child must be able to swim 50 yards of each proper front and back crawl, breaststroke kick and butterfly kick.

Ages 5-8, 8-12:  Students are introduced to competitive swim skills while refining technique on all major strokes.

Required: Child must be able to swim 100 yards of any combination of strokes.

Swim Advancement

Ages 5-8, 8-12: Students learn how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle and discover their full potential through competitive workouts that build stamina and further refine technique.

Ages 6-10, 10-15: Students build endurance, refine all major competitive strokes, and improve starts and turns. Ideal for those who want a competitive workout without team commitment. To progress to this stage, child must have completed the group swim lesson program (through stage 7) and be able to efficiently swim 150 yards of any combination of strokes.

Learn to Dive

Perfect for first-time divers ages 5 years+ and Stage 4+ who have either never tried diving or need to develop the skill of entering the pool hands first. Participants can register for one or more sessions.
