Capital Campaign

On October 29, 2014, the Westfield Area Y cut a ribbon to commemorate completion of the first phase of a multi-year capital improvement project. The goal is to meet current and future community needs by focusing on ADA-accessibility and infrastructure enhancements.

Healthy and vital communities often share one basic and outstanding characteristic — they are home to a thriving community center like the Westfield Area Y. The Y has been a good neighbor serving Cranford, Garwood, Mountainside and Westfield for over 90 years. The challenge lies in keeping a 1929 facility relevant to the present day.

The capital project began outside with a new elevator tower to provide service to the third floor for the first time. A new staircase and a wider entry ramp access a new front entrance and vestibule. For safety, the Y installed an ice melt system in all walkways. The Kids Club classroom has been modernized and the Y is in the process of renovating additional classrooms and upgrading the infrastructure and aesthetics.

Moving forward, a social/refreshment space will be created on the second floor as will an enhanced emergency exit. Additional storage will be added, the plumbing, heating and electrical infrastructure will be upgraded and a number of cosmetic improvements will be made. New ADA-compliant restrooms will be constructed on the second and third floor. Finally, the racquetball courts will be renovated and moved from the lower level to the first floor to create staging space for future lower level renovations.

Commemorate what the Y means to you, to your family, or to the community with a personalized ceramic tile. A customized wall tile will be created for all capital gifts of $125 and more. Forms are available at the Y, or you can make an online contribution and we will contact you regarding the tile.
