Westfield Area YMCA Launches News Stroke Recovery Program

We recently launched a Stroke Recovery Exercise Program, a specialized initiative designed to help survivors continue their recovery, regain independence, and enhance their overall well-being.
According to the American Stroke Association, nearly 800,000 people in the United States experience a stroke each year, and while rehabilitation plays a key role in recovery, ongoing support for survivors remains limited.
The Westfield Area YMCA aims to address this gap, with their new program serving as the vital bridge between recovery and long-term wellness. While traditional therapies provide initial support, stroke survivors often face uncertainty about how to continue to progress after completing rehabilitation.
The program is led by Jean White, along with a team of certified stroke recovery specialists, all of whom are trained to provide personalized attention tailored to each participant's needs and goals.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board, the Y has been able to support staff education for stroke recovery specialist certifications, ensuring expert guidance for participants. Additionally, the grant will help fund essential program supplies.
"I am very excited about this new program," said Jean. "It's a way to reach people who are often underserved and need the support. With the training we've received, we understand the process, the terminology, and the challenges stroke survivors face."
Jean further emphasized the importance of ongoing care beyond traditional rehabilitation: "Once you finish physical therapy, there is this notion that that's as good as you're going to get. You think, ‘what do I do next?’ We are that next step—the ‘after the after.’”
Class Meets Wednesday, 1:45-2:45pm in the Weldon Room.
We invite stroke survivors to take the next step in their recovery journey. For more information about the program, visit www.westfieldynj.org/stroke-recovery or contact Jean White at [email protected] or 908-301-9622 x246.
